![]() Horizontal loop installation for a Waterfurnace geothermal system. For overall energy savings between 35 and 70 percent over conventional heating systems install a heat pump which is also able to provide air conditioning in the summer. ![]() Horizontal loop piping. Natural Resources Canada discontinued their commitment to the ecoACTION geothermal rebate as of March 31, 2010 for those who had not already scheduled their pre-retrofit evaluation (home inspection) with a licensed energy advisor. The Ontario Government is still authorizing rebates for up to $5000 for ground source heating systems until they are able to develop a new plan for energy conservation incentives. The program in place will end March 31, 2011 so check the Ontario Home Energy Savings Program and EcoAction websites for up to date information, restrictions and deadlines if you are considering applying for these grants. Please note it is necessary to have an energy audit done before beginning any improvements. ![]() Vertical Loop installation. Heat pumps extract heat from the air or ground using the ability of the refrigerant to change from a gas to a liquid with the resulting release of heat. In the opposite way they cool by using heat to change the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas in the summer. Traditional electric heat takes one watt of energy to produce one watt of heat where a heat pump can produce up to 5 watts of heat for each watt of energy input. Air source heat pumps approach this level of efficiency during the spring and fall but a geothermal system extracting the heat from the ground can achieve this efficiency throughout much of the winter also. |
